Tell us about yourself
I am a storyteller to sum it all up. For my “9-5” I work in the public relations field where I represent the brands that I love the most and tell their story to media and consumers but my “job” goes way beyond that.As my passion project, I have a beauty blog and business website, ShaunaKay.com where I provide beauty tips and reviews as well as business and branding advice.
The original vision of my blog was supposed to be solely beauty focused. However, along the way, I was helping friends and followers who would also reach out to me for branding advice. After some convincing from friends, I figured I might as well share “wealth” with other budding entrepreneurs and/or bloggers who may be struggling with some of the same things so my vision grew for the site grew. My aim for ShaunaKay.com is to be a resource and hub for the modern day woman for beauty, lifestyle, and business advice and inspiration,
Beauty Blogger + Style
What made you become a beauty blogger?
The transition was easy for me. I live in Toronto, Canada and it had been a challenge finding content with people who looked like in Canada. Things like swatches and reviews were hard to come by. Thank goodness things are getting better now!
I started my blog purely out of my love for beauty and wanting to share my findings with others who may be struggling with some of the same issues I was – being in Canada (limited accessibility, i.e. high shipping costs for the good stuff available in the U.S.), finding brands with a diverse shade range with a similar skin type (oily, combination, acne-prone.)
Still the pool of Canadian beauty bloggers of colour is relatively small, but I am looking forward to being part of this growing group and making some serious waves in the industry.
How would you describe your personal style?
Simple and comfortable
I think it’s important to keep up with news and current events not just as a PR professional but to be an informed member of society. I typically read hard copy newspapers, magazines to start my morning but get a majority of my information from online publications and even social media because it is so up-to-the-minute. Even up-to-the-second.
That being said, it’s easy to get sucked into a rabbit hole of negativity and endless information so I typically unplug at least once a week (usually Saturdays) or whenever my body and mind feels like it needs it. I pray and meditate daily and work out at least 4 times a week. Physical and mental health is really important to me.
Publicist by Day
As a public relations professional, how does your storytelling skills play a factor in blogging?
I think being in the public relations field has given me an extra edge in the blogging world. Because of my PR background, my brain is wired to always look for a “hook” or that newsworthy factor. In other words “Why should/would anyone care to read this”?
As a result, I know how to share a message to make it relatable, relevant and interesting to an audience. People make the mistake of assuming that their content is interesting and useful to their audience just because THEY wrote it. I know. We love what we produce and think it’s amazing and it very well may be. Look for the “hook” in your content and I promise you will see a difference!
Also being on both sides, as a PR professional and a content creator, I am very familiar with what brands look for when they are working with bloggers – things like the quality and consistency of your content, to your social media image, make a world of difference.
How would you describe your moxie (force of character, energy, pep, know-how)?
Straight-forward, strategic and resourceful
Give an example of how you would like to inspire the force, nature, and creativity of womanhood within five years?
In the next 5 years. I hope that my brand is much more than just a website but is a brand synonymous with empowerment, achievement, and success. I’m hoping to get the opportunity to be in the spotlight a bit more and help others on a larger scale. I want to go, global baby!
