My name is Breanna Edwards. Everyone calls me Bre or Brecapri (hints the name of my blog Brecapri.com.) People thought I made “Brecapri” up, but it’s actually my shortened first name and middle name combined, clever, right? lol.
From Detroit, MI, I graduated from Grand Valley State with a Bachelors of Science in Exercise Science with an emphasis in Health and Fitness. I am
Now writing has become my meditation in healing my emotional body and quickly became my safe haven. My brand, Breathe.Love.Glow, embodies my creativity, experiences, and lessons as they come alive as a digital notebook to inspire others on their journey to self-love, healing, personal growth, and overall wellness. Through Breathe.Love.Glow, I want to teach women — especially young black women — the importance of self-love and wellness and how it plays a vital role in self-confidence and well-being.
Also, my mission is to teach the importance of learning from life and getting out of the victim role and to begin digging deeper within ourselves to find answers that are already within us. The power of writing it down helped me with my healing and creative process, and I encourage others to do the same.
Breathe.Love.Glow is taking it back to the basics where we learn how to breathe again, love ourselves and others unconditionally, and glow through everything life throws at us. Breathe.Love.Glow is the epitome of honoring and accepting personal growth in every aspect of our lives!
Now I’ve known you since 2011 (freshman year of college,) and I’ve experienced your beautiful transformation firsthand. Tell us about your journey into the woman you are now, and how you have grown into your wellness and self-love journey?
Yeah, I will admit I was a hot mess back then lol. It took me awhile to get here, but I am making it! A lot of my anger then came from me not feeling good enough at a young age. When we are children, we don’t care about who’s judging us, who’s watching us, or what people think of us. But once we get to a certain age, everything matters — at least it did for me. Nobody knew what I was going through inside as I watched the media’s definition of what beauty is and my peers telling me all the things that didn’t make me woman enough. Crazy, right?
Self-Love
But, being talked about for my physical features I had no control over left me feeling confused. It led me questioning myself, like why am I this way? Girls aren’t supposed to be hairy and have defined. We are always are supposed to have pretty smiles, big boobs, and a nice butt! Although, I have always prided myself for my beautiful arms, everything else got to me.
In addition, I still remember on numerous occasions of peers voluntarily asking if they could fight me or go “20 seconds with me.” If you don’t know what that is, it’s when you have ONLY 20 seconds to fight inside the bathroom and you leave out acting as if nothing happened. After that, fighting became an adrenaline rush for me — a challenge.
However, this later developed into my lack of self-confidence and not feeling good enough, pretty enough, and feminine enough. I always felt like I had to defend myself which brought upon a lot of anger because I just wanted to be me!
I never really felt 100% comfortable in my own skin (which is 100% my fault.) I’ve later realized these insecurities showed up quickly in my intimate relationships in regards to what I allowed. When you don’t know your self-worth, you settle! That was one of my biggest mistakes, settling when I deserved better! That is why I talk so much about the importance of relationships on my blog because they’re a direct mirror to how we feel and treat ourselves.
Today, I still get little remarks here and there, but I don’t feel the need to be defensive anymore. I chuck it up to I love everything you believe to be a “flaw” about me! That’s the thing about growth: it’s painful, excruciating and sometimes it takes losing who you are (which I have) to be able to come out of the dark.
I’ve grown into my wellness and self-love journey by owning who I am, accepting who I am, and not giving a damn what anyone thinks/says. More than anything, I am accepting the things I can’t control. This simple shift in perspective changed everything! Acceptance was my gateway out of my own personal chains.
What inspires you to keep talking about self-love, forgiveness, and healing?
I’ve grown a passion for it! I’ve had many encounters where I had to forgive others for my own healing purposes, which is the ultimate act of self-love. Self-love, forgiveness, and healing are all related. Self-love is a major key
Once you truly begin to love yourself and all of your mishaps, you begin to love others just the way they are and their mishaps. We stay stuck in the victim mindset, and we often forget we are human and humans
Also, I believe it inspires me to keep talking about it
Why is forgiveness so important?
Forgiveness is so important for you and you only! Think about it, you are walking around upset, sad, regretful, and the other person has moved on and living their life. Who do you think it is hurting more — you or them? YOU! Forgiveness is important for your own mental and emotional wellness. No one else’s!
How do you add moxie (force of character, energy, pep, know-how) into your daily life and to the people around you?
Just by being who I am and allowing and accepting others as they are.
How do you want to improve the womanhood you see around you? Give us an example of how you would like to inspire the force, nature, and creativity of womanhood in five years. Include your wildest dream(s).
I want to improve the womanhood I see around me by providing the necessary resources/tools for women to be able to heal with love and not live with resentment, hate, denial, and regret.
My wildest dream is being able to create a community where women feel comfortable telling their story or better yet, owning their truth! I also want a space where we not only speak on the things we’ve been through, but we also come together for women’s wellness in totality — a space for meditation, fitness, nutrition, girl-talk, and being able to teach and reach as many people as I can. I want people, women especially, to live their best life NOW and no later than that! We owe it to ourselves.
Share a tip, or two, for someone to start on the road to self-love and wellness. Take your time, there is no rush. Start by doing all the things you love and enjoy. Secondly, be honest with yourself. It’s easy to blame someone else and the world; start by pointing the mirror at yourself, that’s where your self discovery begins.
What’s coming up next for you?
In the near future, I am planning to release merchandise, e-books, and worksheets on various concepts that’ll help with personal growth and help bring women closer to themselves. Also, I am working on building a community for women to come together and celebrate healing and self-wellness.
