In the world of public relations, every PR student + professional has to communicate well. Regardless of the career field, everyone should have strong communication skills, verbal + written. Writing is essential; employers want employees who can write, communicate, and work effectively. These three traits go together.
Public Relations
PR works with clients to build relationships with their specified public. PR professionals, at some point + time, write the following items to promote their clients. Some of those items include press releases, pitch letters, media kits, social media, blogging, + other media outlets, and other writing experiences + internships. The specified public wants to read well written + organized documents. Without this, clients might lose relationships, trust or loyalty with the public. Here are three tips to help:
Do your homework
When in doubt, look it up! There is no shame in forgetting grammar or punctuation rules. To stop this, bookmark great sites, such as Grammarly or Grammar Girl, for a quick review on common questions. There are great books and handouts too. I purchased the Grammar Girl’s Quick and Dirty Tips for College Students to have a references guide on hand.
Proofread, proofread, + PROOFREAD again!
Avoiding mistakes is as easy as rereading what’s typed. Yes, it’s easy to overlook small + simple errors, but this will eliminate the major errors. Employers are looking for employees who can communicate effectively in whatever they write. Proofreading alleviates stress.
Stay true to yourself
Just because writing requires being effective and well-written, it does not mean that your style of writing has to go as well. If it is for a company, organizations, or has specific requirements, then yes write how they want you to. But for blogging, tweets, emails, and academic assignment, students/individuals should incorporate themselves into their work thus making their personal brand.
