Happy Black History Month and Wakanda Day!
(Had to get that out for the sake of it lol.)
This month, we're featuring Amarrah Smith as our #MoxieFriday woman. I've had the pleasure of working with her during my internship with The Bee Agency. She is a visionary, content developer + strategist, music enthusiast, community leader, and dynamic communicator. Keep reading to learn more about Amarrah!
1. Tell us about yourself and your brand.
My name is Amarrah Smith and I am a Creative Content Writer. My brand is purposed to illustrate the stories of avant-gardists and dreamers through literary pieces that market their brands. A depiction of myself, I strive to create comfortable, personable experiences that allow these game-changers to peel back the layers, revealing their true forms to better cultivate new lanes and waves.
2. So you’re a content writer, what does that exactly mean and entail?
My goal, essentially, is to cultivate a new meaning to what it is to be a content writer. Content writers basically create the written material that represents a brand. This can include anything from editorial write-ups to bios to a social media caption. As a content writer, my goal is to use my love for literature to create the stories and characters in the brands that I represent. This means that I get to know each individual. I listen intently when they speak, feel their vibes and energy, and from that, I tell the stories that their hearts speak.
3. Describe your writing process, from concept to publishing. How do you stay motivated or find inspiration?
This is the fun part [laughs]. I’m a journalist before anything so my process can be a bit invasive. I require recorded phone or in-person consultations with all of my clients. For 30 minutes to an hour, we just chat. I ask questions that dig deep below the surface. During this process, I’m trying to get to the ‘Why’. I want to truly understand your purpose because that’s where the passion and drive lies. After the consultation, I use our conversations to tell stories through various avenues of requested marketing content. It’s truly a joy and gift to be able to learn the hearts and the stories of others. It’s therapeutic and it drives me to keep going. I am blessed to have the ability to write and that gift is so much bigger than me.
4. How would you describe your writing style?
That’s a good question. I’d say very intentional. When I was younger, I was always enamored with books. Since 2 years old, I’d choose books over people [laughs]. What got me every time was how I could read a book and instantly be transported to any time, any place in the world. That’s always been such a beautiful feeling to me. My writing style is intentional because my intent is to create that feeling for anyone who reads my words.
5. Also as a communicator, what is the most important skill you use every day?
Active listening is a skill I’ve been working on heavily lately. It’s amazing what you can hear just by listening. It’s a way to read between the lies and truly hear the intention behind what people say. In communication, your message is 7% of what you say, 38% your tone, and 55% your body language. Actively listening, utilizing eye contact, observing body language and detecting tone aids in determining how we respond. So important. You’d be surprised by how many conflicts you can avoid just by listening and truly hearing a person.
6. Who is your favorite musical artist(s)/genres right now? Do they influence your work in any way?
I love this question. Music is essential to me living. It’s always been a huge part of my upbringing. Honestly, I can’t really create without music. I have playlists for literally every mood. My main Creating Playlist consists of classic Drake (So Far Gone + Comeback Season Mixtapes), Big Sean (classic to current), Rihanna, Natasha Bedingfield, Marvin Gaye, Fela Kuti, Tony Bennett, SZA, Tee Grizzly, NAO, plus a plethora of twerk songs. Music always makes me genuinely feel good. Any song that talks about coming up or any song that allows me to dance + sing my heart out, I’m here for.
7. How would you describe your moxie (force of character, energy, pep, know-how)?
My moxie is embracing, loving, insightful, fun, and a vibe.
8. Give us an example of how you would like to inspire the force, nature, and creativity of womanhood in five years?
In five years, I just want to be a vision of love. I want to spread love and help women see themselves. How often do we just go through life just existing? Not realizing who we are, our strengths, our abilities, even our opportunities to improve. I want to use my words as keys to unlock best versions of ourselves. I truly believe that women in leadership are the future, I just want to be a stepping stone to helping women realize their power.
9. For all of my readers who are aspiring to become content writers or a better writer in general, what advice would you like to share?
Follow Amarrah on Instagram for updates and upcoming information on her website's relaunch in early April!
So what are some take-aways? I love the active listening and being able to unlock and become the best versions of ourselves as women parts. These two notes stuck out because the active listening is very important - I loved the percentage breakdown - and it really helps us to understand others and not just ourselves.
As women, we need to break from the molds of always having to be strong and structured - we can be free and the best versions of ourselves at any and every moment and without the approval of others.
