Scandal
Last night, Scandal – the Shonda Rhimes’ ABC network television hit that had everyone wondering “who is Olivia Pope?” – completed its amazing show run. Seven seasons of Scandal has taken us pretty much everywhere throughout the White House and beyond.
With daring political moves, handling the situations in her white hat, relationships brewing from everywhere (#TeamFitz by the way since beginning), a killer fashion sense, powerful walk & demanding presence, and being a gladiator all the way to eventually leading down a similar path of her father’s, I’ve enjoyed every single moment of this show and appreciate its messages + representation for women!
My Feelings
The feeling Shonda gave on Thank God It’s Thursday (TGIT) nights between the three shows, Grey’s Anatomy, Scandal, and How to Get Away With Murder, was magical in a sense and great to watch. I’m sharing my take-aways and favorite aspects from the entire show: When the show first began in 2012, I was so intrigued because:
- It incorporated an African-American woman who handled the realness of crisis management. It’s als partially based on Judy Smith, an American crisis manager, lawyer, author, and television producer.
- I was currently in college studying Advertising & Public Relations when it started airing. It gave me inspiration, motivation, and an inside look (even though it was scripted) into how crisis management works. Once I started my case study course, I could relate to Scandal and how Olivia went about solving situations.
- As I mentioned before, this show had an African-American (AA) woman lead, Kerry Washington. Kerry was the first AA woman to headline a primetime drama in 38 years. She also became only the second to ever garner an Emmy nomination for Best Lead Actress in a Drama. This is still a huge accomplishment, but an underwhelming fact. The progress AA women are still making in comparison to other women in 2018 is astounding, but I digress. With this entire production being based on an AA woman and created by an AA woman, I was just rooting for everyone to win with my ratings and support!
And let’s talk about how amazing Shonda + crew’s song choices were. From Motown hits, Janet Jackson, and Stevie Wonder, I felt every song choice was perfect for each scene. It gave context, suspense, and insight to what would happen or could possibly happen next.
Scandal’s Crazy, Loveable Characters
Lastly, I cannot forget to acknowledge the reason for Olivia’s living existence – her crazy, insane, but somehow loving parents, Eli and Maya Pope. These two characters, especially Papa Pope, enhanced the show.
I will FOREVER LIVE for a Papa Pope monologue. His character never backed down from a challenge and remained real, even through the toughest situations given, i.e. the blackmailing storyline in season six. Even though he’s still Bryon to me (I hope you know that’s an ADW reference),
Papa Pope will live on as one of the greatest characters ever. Sneaky and manipulative Maya kept me on the edge of my seat too. We never knew what could happen next to her. She too had great monologues with my favorite below.
Scandal will forever live in my top 10 or 20 television shows! I watch a lot of TV, so maybe I should write a post about my favorite tv shows. I’ll be heading to Netflix soon to relive all of the glory that is Olivia Pope.
